Have you walked where the 2021 fires burned? Do you find yourself avoiding your old favorite forest walks?
Come walk together on the Rodeo and Beaver Pond trails from Chickadee Trailhead at Sun Mountain and see the contrast between deep soil burn and untouched forest, both are there. This will be one of many perfect places to follow the forest’s transformation as the years roll by. Come look at the forest in its first post-burn year, and talk about what the future might look
like.

Carolyn Loren is a retired park ranger, who led fire walks at Yellowstone 10 years after the huge wildfires of 1988. She thought of doing this walk since one of her Yellowstone co-workers could not bring herself to walk her favorite trail, burned in those fires, until ten years afterward. That seemed a shame. So please come even if you don’t think a burned forest is anything you want to see. Come if you find a certain beauty and some good surprises in a burned forest. Different reactions to wildfire will make for good conversation! We’ll meet at the Winthrop town trailhead and carpool to Chickadee. Taking the shortcut, the walk will be a little over two miles with about 145’ elevation gain.
