Writing Memoir

There is a world of difference between memoir and autobiography. Memoir is a story from a life; autobiography is a story of a life (usually written by someone famous who readers want to get to know). We will focus on writing craft unique to memoir: showing & telling, a memoir’s “argument,” the issues of time in memoir, and using the sensory palette. Memoirs can be a curated selection of snapshot essays, or perhaps something much longer. Writing is “living twice” and the time you invest will always be a fulfilling journey of discovery.

Bio: Sarah Conover holds a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from the University of Colorado, an MFA in creative writing (poetry) from Eastern Washington University, and has taught creative writing through the Community Colleges of Spokane for many years. She is the author of seven books on world wisdom traditions and spirituality published by Skinner House Books. Her poetry and essays have appeared in numerous literary journals including Floating Bridge Review, and anthologies including We go to the Ruined Place: Contemporary Poets in Defense of Human Rights. She is the grateful recipient of a Washington Artist Trust Grant and fellowships at both the Ucross Foundation and the Willapa Bay Artist in Residence Program. She writes for Tricycle Magazine: the Buddhist Review, and a feature article based on her memoir-in-progress entitled, “Lost at Sea,” can be read here
