Wildflowers with Dana Visalli
Thursday, March 4, 2021, 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM
In this program we will tune our minds to springtime by reviewing many of the most common wildflowers in the Methow, examining some of their adaptations to their environment, and uncovering their tricks for luring in pollinators. We will also attempt to recognize what plant family each species is in, and, simply enjoy their beauty. The first three programs will following the progression of blooms at low elevations, and the 4th program will take a close look at alpine plants.
After learning how to use botanical keys while at the University of New Mexico, Dana worked a field botanist
for 20 years in Oregon and Washington, contracting to state and federal agencies. During that time he traveled
to Iraq and Afghanistan four times each as a citizen diplomat. While volunteering for the environmental group
Nature Iraq in Sulaimaniya he found a 10-volume set of 'The Flora of Iraq' in English on the shelf, that no one
knew how to use, because most Iraq scientists had fled the country due to the war. He ended up giving a workshop
while there to Iraqis on how to use their own Flora. He has published 3 small books on wildflower identification, Dryland Wildflowers, Mountain Wildflowers and Coastal Wildflowers.
