Program 4 addresses the appearance and evolution of life on Earth, the 6 Kingdoms of Life, and the all important invention of photosynthesis, which is the source of most of the biomass and most of food on the planet. Life illustrates the theme of 'emergence': for a time there was no life on Earth; now there are an estimated 10 to 20 million species.
